IBM's HotMedia software for the Java environment is used by creative professionals to add special effects such as streaming audio, 360 degree views, animations, panning and scrolling. HotMedia dynamically determines the minimal code and data content that is needed and downloads it progressively.

The software uses simple-to-use tools and lightweight Java applets that allow transition effects between images, such as wipes and fades. It uses a simple drag-and-drop features to allow multitrack animations, and zoomable, multiresolution images.

HotMedia files are served from standard HTTP servers and require no plug-ins. The software dynamically determines which players are needed and downloads them. Images are downloaded progressively, so the user experience begins right away, without waiting for the entire file to be received.
