Below, the top 10 search terms by search volume. Data are provided by Hitwise.

Points of note include the continued rise in searches for "cash for clunkers," which accounted for 2.36 percent of searches in the automotive category in August, up from 1.75 percent in July.

In the social media space, Facebook's dominance and MySpace's reported traffic demise are, perhaps, echoed in search frequency. Searches for Facebook rose from 7.04 percent in July to reach 7.99 percent in August. In the same period, searches for MySpace fell from 6.63 percent share to 6.15 percent.
