The war in Iraq grabs the top spot on the Lycos 50 from the usual entertainment-related search terms.
The war in Iraq has finally overtaken various entertainment and seasonal event items among those using Lycos to search the Internet. The search term “war in Iraq” catapulted from #18 to #1 on the Lycos 50 for the week ending May 8, 2004, largely due to the controversial photos of Iraqi prisoners. Video of American POWs were the propellant for the last time searches related to the Iraq War reached #1, which was during the week of April 1, 2003.
There are a handful of other entries on the Lycos 50 and the Yahoo Buzz Index for the week ending May 9, 2004 that stray from the typical celebrity and entertainment searches. “Kentucky Derby” (#6) and “Cinco de Mayo” (#17) made the Yahoo list, while the week’s Lycos 50 marked the re-entry of “Chernobyl” (#32) and the continued presence of dieting-related searches.
The lists included the ever-present “Britney Spears” and “Jennifer Lopez” who have both spent 247 weeks on Lycos and 162 on Yahoo. Also appearing on both lists: “American Idol,” “Usher,” “Lindsay Lohan,” “Friends,” “Beyonce,” “Harry Potter,” “Christina Aguilera,” “Jessica Simpson,” “NBA,” and “Van Helsing.”
Other long-timers on the Lycos 50 include: “Dragonball (#6),” “Pamela Anderson (#11),” “WWE (#12),” “Las Vegas (#28),” while “Curves (#49)” and “Carmen Electra (#50)” make return visits.
