Market share for smartphones using the Google Android operating system in the U.S. reached 26 percent, representing the first time it ranked higher than Apple smartphones, according to a comScore report.

During the three months ended Nov. 30, 2010, a total of 25 percent of smartphones in the U.S. were using Apple's operating system.

Ranked number No 1: RIM's BlackBerry devices, which accounted for 33.5 percent of all smartphones. However, RIM saw its market share drop by 4.1 percent compared to the prior three-month period.

The battle over market share intensified this week during CES, a consumer technology tradeshow in Las Vegas. That's where many companies, including Panasonic and Motorola, announced the development of tablets using the Android system, according to Engadget.

And Amazon said it's opening an Android app store, according to reports. The Android app store would compete with Apple's App Store.
