Foursquare's geo-social app is now available as a user experience and marketing platform in Russian, Korean, Thai, Portuguese, and Bahasa (Indonesian). Prior to today's announcement, the mobile app appeared in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Japanese.
In an email to ClickZ News, Foursquare Erin Gleason spokesperson said "merchants have always been able to offer Specials all over the world, but it will be easier for them to get up and running in these countries now because…our business pages…will be translated."
So, marketers in 11 languages will be able to leverage Foursquare's seven types of "specials" available on the platform, with the most widely used ones being the "Check-in Special" and "Newbie Special."
In mid-June, Foursquare tipped the 10 million users mark, and Gleason has since told ClickZ News that it has "continued to experience record growth." Today, her New York-based employer lauded its global presence, as she stated that "50 [percent] of foursquare’s usage comes from outside of the U.S., and we expect to see the rate of our explosive international growth increase with today's launch."
Below are user increase statistics this year vs. 2010 for each country affected by the new languages, according to Foursquare.
Russia - 365 percent
Brazil - 360 percent
Portugal - 234 percent
Thailand - 318 percent
Korea - 140 percent
Indonesia - 160 percent
