For Third Time, CBS Stars Take Over Social Media Accounts

  |  November 4, 2011

Following in the footsteps of similar initiatives earlier this year, CBS talent will take over the Facebook pages and Twitter feeds of their shows for a week beginning Saturday, November 5, in what the network is calling "CBS Social Sweep Week."

Notable entertainment and sports names will program the official social media content for their shows on the days of their broadcasts.

A CBS rep declined to say which stars are attached, noting "part of the fun of the initiative will be the actors surprising their fans and revealing who is taking over on the respective days that their shows air." CBS talent includes actors like Kat Dennings, Ashton Kutcher, Melissa McCarthy and Tom Selleck, many of whom are already active on Twitter and Facebook.

The content will include commentary, photos, videos and answers to fans' questions. It will also include what CBS is calling "exclusive content."

The weeklong event has its own hashtag, #SocialSweepWeek, and website. The idea is to engage CBS viewers and potential viewers and build awareness and loyalty for shows.

In April, CBS held #CBSTweetWeek, during which viewers were able to log on to their Twitter accounts and CBS.com to see actors, musicians and sports analysts tweet live during the broadcast of their respective programs. Throughout the shows, fans were given commentary and the opportunity to submit questions. It was followed in September by another CBS Tweet Week for its new fall season.

During Social Sweep Week, CBS.com and the network's Twitter and Facebook accounts will reveal each morning which stars will be take over their shows' social media accounts. In addition to pictures, videos, exclusive show content and status updates, fans can also ask questions and comment on postings.

Social Sweep Week kicks off with the Saturday broadcast of the game between the nation's first- and second-ranked college football teams, LSU and Alabama.

To promote the event, CBS entertainment news show Entertainment Tonight has teased Social Sweep Week in a video.

Participating shows include The Amazing Race, The Good Wife, How I Met Your Mother, 2 Broke Girls, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, Person of Interest, The Mentalist, CSI: New York, Blue Bloods, and others.
