Groupon announced today that 25 percent of all purchases in December 2011 were bought on mobile devices.
In addition, the web-based daily deals company's mobile app user base tripled last year compared to 2010. Groupon said it has more than 9 million users of its app, which was launched in March 2010. For comparison, Foursquare - which is a mobile-focused company that debuted its app a year earlier – has 15 million users.
In a press release highlighting year over year growth for mobile usage, Groupon said merchants have gotten on board as well. According to the Chicago-based brand, 12,000 retailers are using its merchant mobile app to record voucher redemptions.
At the same time, the lion's share of Groupon's business is still done online. It has well over 115 million email subscribers.
