Wood-cleaning brand Murphy Oil Soap has partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to tree conservation and forest protection, to launch a Pinterest campaign called “Repin. Reforest.”
According to the Arbor Day Foundation, National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April, but many states observe it on different dates based on when tree planting is best. In Alaska, for example, the Arbor Day Foundation says Arbor Day is the third Monday in May. In Hawaii, it’s the first Friday in November.
The household cleaning brand says consumers can help raise money for the Arbor Day Foundation by “repinning images that inspire them” from its Pinterest page.
Murphy Oil Soap is donating $50,000 to support the Arbor Day Foundation’s forest restoration efforts. And for each repin of an image from the Murphy Oil Soap Pinterest page between April 8 and June 30, the brand says it will donate an additional $1 — up to $20,000 — to help plant trees across the U.S.
It was not clear if the promotion is limited to the “Repin. Reforest.” board or if all five boards on Murphy Oil Soap’s Pinterest page are included.
Murphy Oil Soap is a Colgate-Palmolive brand. A rep was not available for comment.
In order to meet its $20,000 goal, Murphy Oil Soap would have to get about 240 repins a day over the 84-day promotional period.
As of Friday, the “Repin. Reforest.” Board, which features pins like, “If You Could, You Wood” and “Knock on Wood, Lovingly,” had about 580 repins, or roughly half of where it would need to be to keep pace to raise the full $20,000 by June 30.
Murphy Oil Soap’s other Pinterest boards — Inspiring Interiors, Wood Textures, Murphy au Natural and Wood Appreciation- – had a combined total of about 30 repins on Friday.
The idea of saving wood plays out prominently on Murphy Oil Soap’s website. It contains messaging about “caring for wood and where it came from” and also has a page promoting the Pinterest effort.
In addition, Murphy Oil Soap has a YouTube page.
