Marketing People on the Move: Autumn 2013

Catch up on the news of new hires, promotions and other personnel moves in major creative agencies, brands and media companies this fall.

Fall 2013 saw a number of notable new hires, promotions and other personnel news across the online marketing industry. Here are a few transitions of note:

Michelle Morris, Facebook

Facebook has hired Michelle Morris to help car companies build their brands and increase their sales on this social network. Before joining Facebook, Morris spent seven years leading Google’s North American automotive advertising team. Previously, she worked at BBDO Detroit, running Chrysler’s account. Morris will be based in Detroit.

Jeanne Jennings, Alchemy Worx

Alchemy Worx has appointed Jeanne Jennings as Vice President, Global Strategic Services. Longtime ClickZ columnist Jennings will lead Alchemy Worx’s strategic services team in and outside the U.S, helping the company deploy more than 300 B2C and B2B email campaigns per month.

Jennings has over 20 years of experience in email marketing. Previously, she founded an email marketing consultancy and served as Head of Email Product Development at Reed Business Information US (formerly Cahners). Jennings is also the author of The Email Marketing Kit: The Ultimate Email Marketer’s Bible, published by SitePoint.

Lee Garfinkel, DraftFCB

Lee Garfinkel is slated to take over as CEO of DraftFCB New York. Prior to this appointment, Garfinkel was chairman of New York and chief creative officer of Global Brands, Havas Worldwide. Before Havas, he was chief creative officer of DDB New York.

This move is part of recent executive changes at DraftFCB under new global CEO Carter Murray. In his new role, Garfinkel will work in the management team that includes chief creative officer Javier Campopiano and chief strategy officer Sara Bamber.

Walt Cheruk, [X+1]

[X+1] has made Walt Cheruk Vice President of Agency & Media Development, Eastern Region, to lead agency relationships and media development. Cheruk moves into this new position as the New York-based marketing technology provider sees more benefits and opportunities from its data management business.

Cheruk joins from Carat, where he was head of digital media, responsible for the management and growth of its digital media practice in the U.S. John Nardone, chairman and CEO of [x+1], is confident that with over 25 years agency and media experience, Cheruk can help [x +1] effectively partner with agencies and power their campaigns with data. “As programmatic technologies mature to centralized data and decisioning, few have the first-hand experience Walt has to help agencies to take full advantage of an Agency DMP,” Nardone said in press release.

Michael Friedenberg, IDG Communications

Michael Friedenberg has been promoted to CEO of IDG Communications Worldwide. This former CEO of IDG Communications U.S. now oversees IDG’s media operations in 86 countries all over the world. During his tenure, Friedenberg was responsible for IDG’s U.S. B2B and consumer brands, as well as IDG TechNetwork (U.S.) and IDG World Expo. Friedenberg joined IDG in 2005 as President and CEO of CXO Media. In his eight years at IDG, he held positions including CEO and president of IDG Enterprise.

Brent Smart, Saatchi & Saatchi New York

Brent Smart, who joined Saatchi & Saatchi in December 2011, has been promoted to CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi New York. He currently sits on the Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide Executive Board as well. Smart replaced former CEO Durk Barnhill, who shifted to a new position as business development director. Both Smart and Barnhill report to Kevin Roberts, CEO Worldwide of Saatch & Saatchi. Prior to joining Saatchi & Saatchi, Smart was worldwide managing director on General Mills and previously worked at BBDO for seven years.

Mike Hopkins, Hulu

The Hulu Board of Directors has appointed Mile Hopkins as new CEO. Hopkins has been a Hulu Board Director since 2011. He succeeds Andy Forssell, who served as acting CEO from March to October 2013. Before rising to CEO, Hopkins had been president of distribution for Fox Networks Group since 2008. Hopkins is based in Hulu’s headquarters in Los Angeles.

JWT

In mid-October this year, JWT conducted a series of leadership changes, as it announced four management level hires.

Robert Frost, cxecutive creative director, joins from Deutsch New York, where he was senior VP, group creative director.

Bryan Gaffin, a veteran from RAPP, is the agency’s new group creative director. He will work with healthcare clients, including Johnson & Johnson, Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca.

Sherri Chambers joins as global business director. Chambers formerly served as group brand director at 72andSunny, a communications company with offices in Los Angeles and Amsterdam.

Kimberly Samskin-Barger has appointed creative director. Previously, she served as lead creative at Digitas, running the agency’s American Express OPEN and American Express Entertainment Access accounts.
