Digital Marketing People on the Move: May 2014 Roundup

This is a roundup of new hires and promotions in the digital marketing industry during May.

May represents the unofficial start of summer, the season of barbecues and beach parties. But in the digital marketing industry, the month doesn’t seem to be quite as light-hearted, as brands and agencies aggressively competed for digital talent.

Tracey Follows Departs JWT

JWT’s chief strategy officer and executive partner, Tracey Follows, has decided to leave the agency after 18 months in the role.

Follows joined JWT in October of 2012. Previously, she spent three years at creative agency VCCP where she served as executive planning director. Before that, she was head of consumer communications at BT.

Hulu Taps Netflix Marketing Head Jenny Wall

Hulu has hired Jenny Wall as senior vice president, head of marketing.

Before she joined Hulu, Wall spent a year and a half at Netflix, where she led the company’s global creative team and helped market original shows including House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, and Arrested Development. Prior to Netflix, she served as chief marketing officer (CMO) at entertainment agency BLT Communications.

Wall also has experience on the agency side. She started the interactive division at agency Crew Creative, and founded interactive agency GO Marketing where she conducted campaigns for HBO, Discovery, and Paramount, among others.

Jonathan Mildenhall Leaves Coca-Cola for Airbnb

Airbnb has tapped Coca-Cola’s top marketer Jonathan Mildenhall as its new CMO.

Most recently, Mildenhall served as vice president of integrated marketing communication and design excellence for Coca-Cola North America. Before that, he held a global marketing role in the company since 2007.

Mildenhall has an agency background as well. He served as head of strategy at Mother, as well as held account management roles at a number of agencies, including TBWA, HHCL, and Bartle Bogle Hegarty.

Marie Gulin Migrates From L’Oreal Paris to L’Oreal USA

L’Oreal USA has appointed Marie Gulin as CMO. She takes over for global CMO Marc Speichert. Specific duties of her role were not disclosed.

Gulin joined L’Oreal in 2001, when she served as international digital project manager for the Vichy division. With more than 15 years of experience, she has held several digital marketing and e-commerce roles within the company, most recently as a global head of integrated marketing communications for L’Oreal Paris.

Christian Juhl, New Global CEO at Essence

Digital agency Essence has promoted Christian Juhl to partner and global chief executive officer (CEO). With this promotion, former global CEO Matt Isaacs becomes executive chairman. Juhl is based in San Francisco.

Having joined Essence in October of 2013, Juhl most recently served as the head of the agency’s North American operation. Previously, he held a number of ascending roles at Razorfish, including president of the company’s West region, senior vice president, and managing director. Prior to that, he worked at marchFirst, US Web/CKS, and GE Capital.

Two New Hires at Ogilvy & Mather New York

Ogilvy & Mather (Ogilvy) New York has named Keith Anderson executive creative director, head of art, and Jenny Gadd as executive director of content production.

In his role, Anderson will focus on IBM, BlackRock, and new business. He will report to Steve Simpson, chief creative officer at Ogilvy North America.

With more than 20 years of experience, Anderson most recently worked at AMV BBDO. Prior to that, he spent two decades at Goodby Silverstein & Partners (GSP) San Francisco, where he served as associate partner and director of design, leading the agency into the digital age.

Anderson has won major industry awards from Cannes and The One Show, among others.

As the new executive director of content production, Gadd will be in charge of Ogilvy’s broadcast and online video producers, as well as business affairs, talent, and broadcast operations. She will report to Matt Bonin, chief production officer at Ogilvy New York .

Previously, Gadd worked at New York-based creative agency Johannes Leonardo, where she served as head of integrated production. Before that, she was executive producer at Stockholm-based digital agency North Kingdom, overseeing production for brands such as Adidas, Google, and Toyota.

Gadd moved to the U.S. from Sweden in 1996. In her early career, she spent seven years at advertising agency Fallon Worldwide in Minneapolis.

She will serve on the Film Craft Jury at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in June of this year.

Jonathan Byrne to Lead Creative Unit at DDB California

DDB California has hired Jonathan Byrne as creative director. In his new role, Byrne will be in charge of ongoing diversification and integration of new skill sets into the agency’s creative department.

Before he joined DDB, Byrne spent a decade at Venables Bell & Partners, where he started off as a creative and was quickly promoted to creative director. Prior to that, he worked at a number of agencies, including TDA_Boulder and McClain Finlon.

With more than 14 years of agency experience, Byrne has won many creative awards from advertising competitions, including The One Show and the American Advertising Awards (formerly the ADDY Awards).

Lisa Namerow Joins XAPP Media From Slacker Radio

Interactive radio advertising service provider XAPP Media has named Lisa Namerow senior vice president of business development and publisher relations. In her new role, Namerow will work closely with the executive team to set up the company’s market position and business direction. Meanwhile, she will be in charge of XAPP Media’s partner and publisher relations.

Previously, Namerow was senior vice president of strategic partnerships and audio monetization at Slacker Radio, managing strategic partnerships including Verizon and Time Warner Cable. Before that, she worked at AOL where she held several roles, and most recently served as general manager of the AOL Music Network and AOL Radio.

Key Executive Hires at AdColony

Mobile video marketing platform AdColony has appointed Andrew French as general manager EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa). In the newly created role, French will be responsible for strategic account management for top mobile publishers and advertisers in the region. He will be based out of London.

Previously, French served as vice president of client services at mobile solutions company Somo, where he was in charge of all media revenue. At Somo, he worked with more than 250 partners to build to the company’s international client list and global trading division.

Additionally, Stefan Adamczyk will join AdColony as sales director for EMEA. He will be based out of Paris, France.

Prior to AdColony, Adamczyk worked at Adloqi and Mobile Ventures, where he helped brands and agencies deliver successful mobile advertising campaigns.

Collective Creates Three Positions

Programmatic multi-screen advertising company Collective has hired Ken Nelson, Barry Garbarino, and Natasha Dure as senior vice president (SVP) for brand insights group (BIG), vice president (VP) of marketing strategy and events, and VP of communications, respectively.

In his newly created role, Nelson will lead the BIG team to provide effective business strategies and solutions. Previously, he served as VP of business development for Exponential’s platform services, providing audience insights and modeling services directly to advertisers and agency trading desks.

As the new VP of marketing strategy and events, Garbarino will be in charge of Collective’s marketing efforts. Most recently, he worked at the Association of National Advertisers where he was responsible for the day-to-day management of all marketing functions.

Dure has joined Collective as VP of communications. In her new role, Dure will oversee the company’s internal and external communications. Prior to Collective, she was senior director of corporate communications at Everyday Health Inc. Before that, she worked for DoubleClick and The McGraw-Hill Companies.
