It’s been a rough day for former McDonald’s chief executive (CEO) Don Thompson, and Burger King seems to be capitalizing on that misfortune via Twitter.
After today’s announcement that McDonald’s has replaced its CEO after a year of disappointing sales and failed marketing campaigns, Burger King fired off a tweet offering Thompson a flame-grilled Whopper as a consolation prize. “We always welcome everyone,” reads the caption.

This isn’t the first time McDonald’s has been involved in a brand war across social. Last year, when Taco Bell launched a campaign using real people named Ronald McDonald to publicize its new breakfast menu, McDonald’s shot back on Facebook by posting a picture of the eponymous clown petting a Chihuahua, Taco Bell’s mascot, with the caption “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
McDonald’s has yet to publicly comment on Burger King’s snarky tweet.
