Though Android powers more smartphones, Apple's reach is boosted by iPod and iPad.
Although Google’s Android mobile operating system now powers more smartphones than Apple’s iOS, the latter still reaches more U.S. users thanks to devices such as the iPad and the iPod Touch, according to data from comScore.
The measurement firm estimated iOS powered an average of around 38 million devices in the three months ending February 2011, while Android reached just shy of 24 million over the same period.
The majority of mobile ad networks are capable of serving ads to iPad and Android devices as well as the iPhone, meaning advertisers could find larger audiences running campaigns across iOS devices than Android ones. Networks such as Google’s AdMob, however, offer the ability to deliver ads to both.
