Top Web Properties in Japan for October, 2007

Yahoo is identified as the most used Web property in Japan while news and sports sites gain traffic by users looking for coverage of current events.

Yahoo is big in Japan, with over 41.3 million Japan-based Internet users accessing its properties in October. The top Internet properties and fastest-gaining properties visited by the country’s 54 million Internet users are covered in data released by comScore.

The top search engine was used by just under 77 percent of the total Internet audience in Japan. Google served 31.7 million unique Internet users and Microsoft, 29.4 million. Japan’s other top 10 online properties are: Rakuten (28.5 million); NTT Group (25.7 million); FC2 (24.6 million); Nifty Corp. (22.8 million); Livedoor (22.5 million); Wikipedia (21.1 million); and GMO Internet Group (19.3 million).

News sites IZA.ne.jp (60 percent increase) and JIJI.com (57 percent) became the two highest-gaining Web properties in Japan due to interest in a defense ministry payoff scandal. Japanese Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuka drew traffic to sports sites such as Nikkansports.com (35 percent increase) and Sponichi.co.jp (12 percent gain) during the U.S. Major League Baseball World Series.

The data are derived from comScore’s World Metrix service. The service collects data from a global panel of more than two million opt-in consumers.
