In an effort to improve its platform, user-generated news site Reddit has released location targeting on its front page that will make promoted posts more relevant for location-specific products and services.
In targeting ads by city and country, Reddit says it is able to serve more relevant ads by using a user’s location. The platform says it takes a variety of information, including IP addresses, into consideration when determining what ads to display. Potential posts with location targeting include movie premieres, products that can only ship to specific areas and concert or other meet-ups in specific cities.
Reddit also wants to ensure users know when they’re commenting on ads that may be shown to them because of location. Consequently, targeted promoted links will also display a notification above the comment box with either a globe icon if a country is being targeted, or a map icon if a city is being targeted.
Targeting by country and cities has been available within image ads for quite some time, Reddit adds.
In March, Reddit says it had 115 million unique visitors from 190 countries, who viewed 5.4 billion pages.
Reddit also says 10 percent of all ad revenue in 2014 will be given to nonprofits chosen by its users.
In addition, Reddit says it is offering 200 small ad campaigns for its “international friends,” or overseas companies that want to set up some of the first ads “targeted based on country viewing from.” Interested parties can apply on Reddit’s advertising page.
