Disney Fetes It’s a Small World Anniversary With Sing-Along Video, Virtual Dolls

The 50th anniversary of the infamous Disney attraction will include lots of singing on a dedicated website, as well as the ability to design virtual dolls.

Try not to get this stuck in your head: To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Disneyland attraction “It’s a Small World,” Disney says guests and cast members around the world will unite in song for what it calls “a historic, global event” that will ask consumers to add their voices to a virtual sing-along on the It’s a Small World 50th anniversary website.

The site allows users to record themselves, as well as choose whether they will sing in English, Spanish, or French. It requires access to a user’s microphone and camera and suggests using headphones when recording rather than speakers. Participants must also enter their birthdays before proceeding.

In addition, users can build a doll like those featured within the ride, choosing features like heads, torsos, and legs as well as skin color. Once completed, users can name their dolls and add them to the sing-along to “make it official,” the site says.

There is also an option to “Surprise Me,” in which the site generates a doll of its own.

On April 10, Disney says hundreds of voices from the Disneyland Resort in California, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan, Disneyland Paris in France, and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort will sing the “It’s a Small World” theme song.

Disney also released a video featuring people around the world singing, dancing to, and playing the song. Disney says the video was filmed across six continents in more than 25 countries. As of March 25, it has 263,000 views.

The site features so-called celebrity sing-along videos, including the casts of The View and The Chew and actress Isabella Rossellini.

Disney says it will donate $150,000 to UNICEF for the anniversary plus $1 for every sing-along video recorded and another $1 for every virtual doll created on the website, up to $100,000.

The company will also sponsor Google Hangouts that invite fans to participate in the anniversary events. Disney says SmallWorld50.com will have more details.

Calling it “one of the most beloved attractions in the history of Disney Parks,” Disney says “It’s a Small World” is featured at all five Disney parks and has been ridden by more than 1 billion guests.

Disney did not respond to a request for comment.
