Execs & Accounts: Layoffs at Heavy, Flashlight Creates Digital Unit

Heavy.com laid off a reported 20 percent of its staff. The move will “make the company more efficient and profitable,” said the company’s statement yesterday. Heavy also spun off its video advertising unit earlier this week.

Omnicom’s Flashlight Interactive named Kristen Goelz head of its new digital business unit. The digital communications unit will handle programs and capabilities including video production, animation, gaming, interactive training tools, and thought leader development programs. Goelz was a member of the interactive division of Accel Healthcare Communication.

Geary Interactive designed WD-40’s new corporate and brand Web sites.

David Kang was named VP of client services at GSI Commerce. Kang held dual client and new business roles as senior partner and new business director at Beyond Interaction. At GSI he works directly with Nick Pahade. Kang will oversee development of marketing and design strategies and relationships with partners within general and specialties verticals.

Explore Minnesota Tourism selected Morsekode for its interactive marketing initiatives. The state tourism agency aims to maximize emerging technologies to market the state as a tourism destination.

Quattro Wireless expanded its sales staff to cover New York, San Francisco, and Chicago markets. Robyn Borok, East coast manager, previously served as senior director of sales at AdMob. Brent Wall, West coast manager, was director of advertising sales at Ad Infuse. Jim Philbin, Midwest manager, worked at TWC Media Solutions as account manager for Weather.com.

AbelsonTaylor promoted four to account executive. They are Rachel Dodson, Kelly Rupiper, Sophie De Geest, and Dyer Vann.

Verve Wireless named Kendall Marolda VP of local market development. She will work with local publishers to help them understand the nuances of the mobile Web and how to extend and monetize content. Marolda was previously at CareerBuilder.com where she was newspaper relationship manager.

Interclick announced three new hires. They are Jason Lynn, VP of product management, formerly of Yahoo and Tacoda; Ben Vincelette, director of West coast sales, formerly senior sales executive at Advertising.com; and Tim Stejskal, director of Midwest sales, formerly senior sales executive at MSN.

Sephora extended its contract with Acxiom for integrated digital marketing campaigns. The relationship was extended for an additional two years.

OMD U.K. was awarded HMV’s affiliate digital business.
