Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Skype: A large majority of social media and communications companies have chosen blue as their branding colour. Whilst the choice of many of the companies is a calculated marketing tool (blue is the “colour of communication” say experts), a recent investigation into the subject attributes Facebook’s famous blue colour scheme to founder Mark Zuckerberg’s colour blindness.
Answering Hopes & Fears’ question ‘Why is blue the most common color for social media apps?’, internationally renowned business colour and branding expert Karen Haller revealed:
“It’s no surprise the major social media companies have chosen blue given it is the colour of communication. You will also notice they have chosen different blues. The light blue of Twitter also expresses the fun side of social media given the high amount of yellow undertone. I believe Mark [Zuckerberg] is color blind and blue is his favourite colour and that’s why they went with blue. So it was a personal preference – but the psychology of colour is still at play here.”
