Leading digital media companies such as Google, Facebook and Yahoo! have come under fire after revelations surrounding the US spy programme, Prism, has left much of the public nervous about the amount of information they share that can be accessed by Government officials.

Leading US firms, including software giant Apple, are reported to have collaborated with the National Security Agency (NSA) on this scheme, and are accused of allowing officials to use and monitor information from their website servers, though many are already denying their involvement.

The official leaked document obtained by the Guardian claims Prism operates with the “assistance of communications providers in the US”, and names AOLApple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, PalTalk and Yahoo!.

Digital marketing and media experts are concerned the fall-out will severely damage the US’ reputation as a leader in digital marketing and media innovation.
