Hairy Controversy: Veet pulls ad after backlash of complaints

Feminists everywhere rejoice as Veet pulls controversial "sexist" ad which depicted a hairy man being magically transformed into a hairless babe - thanks to Veet.

Uh oh, not a good week for the people behind Veet’s latest digital campaign. Men and women took to Twitter this week in rage, complaining about the anti-feminist sentiment behind Veet’s latest ad. The 30 second commercial features a couple peacefully sleeping in bed. A clean-shaven man is awoken next to hairy guy with a woman’s voice and by the end of the ad, the shaggy man transforms into a woman. It ends with the line, “Feel womanly around the clock.”

The ad went viral, but not for good reason. Tweeters formed a digital backlash, tweeting angrily that the ad was offensive because it shames women and measures masculinity by body hair.

The sexist undertones (albeit no so discreet) led Veet to remove the ad, and they have since released this statement on their Facebook page.

Is this the end for Veet? Or is this a case of all publicity is good publicity? Was the campaign deliberately outrageous to create a buzz? The debate continues.
