Tweets of the Week: Labor Day Was No Match for Apple's Day

While holidays always bring out brand Tweets, Labor Day was drowned by the attention Apple received on Twitter, where the hashtag for its annual event was trending for two straight days.

Because most people had Monday off in celebration of Labor Day, this week got off to a late start. Like any other holiday, Labor Day engendered many Tweets from brands. The always amusing Denny’s referenced relaxation, while Marriott stayed on-brand with a travel quote.

Others like YP, Seamless, and the normally clever Snickers (when I think back to Danny Trejo playing Marcia Brady in my favorite Super Bowl ad, I still laugh out loud) seem to be phoning it in.

For its part, Outback Steakhouse gave a shout-out to race car driver Kevin Harvick while tweeting for the holiday. Oh – and the chain restaurant also threw in a reference to the fact that it was giving away free Bloomin’ Onions, which may have had something to do with the 1,200 favorites and 500 retweets.

In terms of this week’s Twitter attention, none of these brands held a candle to Apple, despite the fact that Apple doesn’t even have an official profile. Sure, the company may be behind @Apple. But since that handle hasn’t sent out a single Tweet in four years, there’s no way to tell whether it’s actually your neighbor Barry Applebaum.

Still, Apple’s annual event was Wednesday, and #AppleEvent was trending for two days, generating more than 100,000 Tweets. Even Yahoo Tweeted with the hashtag – how often do you see one brand Tweet about another one?

Well there was the time that Burger King tweeted about McDonald’s and was snubbed. This instigated an on-going discussion between a few chain restaurants: Denny’s and Krystal, a southern burger chain, were quick to chime in. Also Giraffas and Wayback Burgers, fast food restaurants headquartered in Brazil and Connecticut, have since jumped in on the conversation as well.

That mash-up Peace Day Burger is happening after all.
