Twitter has made changes to the way in which photos can be shared on its site, adding options to tag users in images and upload more than one image in a single message.
Twitter software engineer César Puerta unveiled the features in a blog post, explaining that the company was moving to make images more interactive, without affecting the short character limit.
“Tagging people in a picture makes conversations around photos fun and easy. And tagging doesn’t affect character count in the Tweet – you can tag up to 10 people in a photo and still have all 140 characters at your disposal,” he says.
An example screenshot of the feature is included below.
Users will receive a notification if they are tagged in a photo and can also adjust their account settings to choose who can tag them or if they do not wish to be tagged in images.
Furthermore, the ability to upload up to four photos in a message is now available for users of the Twitter app on iPhones.
The functionality will be added to Android and the desktop Twitter website “soon,” although the company did not give a specific date. All platforms can now display the multi-image messages now, which will show up as pictured below.
Twitter’s rollout of new functions around photos underlines its desire to compete more with services such as Instagram, owned by Facebook, as the sharing of images become central to social sites.
