Yahoo today unveiled a new Web site for the ONE campaign built by its developers during time donated by Yahoo under its Yahoo for Good program.
ONE is a two-year-old group, founded in part by musician Bono of U2, whose goal is to fight global poverty and AIDS. It began an online push last year, alongside its offline and events-based marketing efforts.
The goals of the ONE.org site are to encourage membership in ONE, connect with like-minded individuals, and to mobilize grassroots participation. To accomplish those goals, the new site uses several community features from across Yahoo’s network, such as Yahoo Groups, Yahoo Answers and Flickr. It has been re-architected using AJAX technology to improve the user interface and allow it to handle high-volume traffic.
Visitors are able to sign a declaration against poverty and AIDS, and email it on to friends. They can also upload photos to Flickr to become a “Face of One.” Visitors can join or start a Yahoo Group to connect with other volunteers in their area. A ONE ticker shows the number of people joining ONE in real time.
Yahoo’s developers worked on the ONE.org project as part of what Yahoo calls a “scrum.” The name is derived from a rugby play that appears to be mass confusion, but really is a series of strategic moves. Yahoo has adopted it to describe a highly-collaborative, self-organizing team. The company has created the “Yahoo for Good Scrum,” a program that allows Yahoo employees to take up to three months from their typical day jobs to apply technological talents to projects that deliver a positive impact in the world.
“Yahoo employees are eager to make a difference in the world. The Yahoo for Good Scrum program gives them the opportunity to apply skills, experience and talent to support an important social mission,” Meg Garlinghouse, director of Yahoo for Good, said in a statement. “We are hopeful that the new features will inspire the world’s largest online community to take action to help ONE fight global poverty and AIDS.”
