Rumours surrounding the idea that YouTube would soon be announcing paid-for subscription channels were last week finally proved right, as the internet giant confirmed and launched 53 pilot channels on Friday, 10th May.
The channels, which include National Geographic for Kids, can be accessed for free over an initial two-week trial period, until subscription fees kick in at $0.99 (64p) a month.
Many companies will be offering yearly rates for their channels, and the channels will be available across a broad range of platforms, including mobile, tablet and TV.
In a statement, YouTube commented: “Just as the partner program empowered creators to take their channels to the next level, we look forward to seeing how this great community of creators moves ahead with a new way to reach the fan communities that made their channels a hit.”YouTube subscription channels go live
