Amazon will begin delivering fresh fruit and veg to consumers across London and Leeds in a bid to tap into the UK’s £149bn grocery market.

Amazon will begin delivering fresh fruit and veg to consumers across London and Leeds in a bid to tap into the UK’s £149bn grocery market.

The digital retailer will launch the service as soon as September in the capital and April next year in Leeds.

Amazon Fresh is positioned to steal market share from Britain’s established supermarket delivery services – aiming to drive its USP with Amazon Dash – a wireless device for placing grocery orders.

The new service is reported to be aggressively targeting a 2% market share – three times that of Ocado.

The retailer will save costs by using third-party vans and cool boxes, rather than invest in a refrigerated fleet and will offer a limited range of 1,200 fresh items.
