How do digital ads affect consumer mobile phone bills? An ad-blocking company used a full-page ad in the Financial Times to illustrate the negative impact running mobile ads has on consumer cost.

Mobile ads consume 50% of the data mobile subscribers pay for,” the ad says. “Advertisers make billions in mobile advertising. Consumers should not have to subsidize their business.”

Shine, the ad-blocking company who ran the ad, calls for carriers and mobile trade group GSMA to support “zero rating”, which means customers would not be charged for certain data including advertising.  

A Deutsche Telekom executive recently argued on LinkedIn that companies such as Google and Facebook should foot the bill for mobile ad data, but soon deleted the post.
