Facebook launches anonymous community app – Rooms

According to the app’s blog, the new tool is designed to transfer the utility of message boards to the booming mobile world.

Welcome to Rooms – a brand new anonymous social app developed by Facebook.

Much like the social pages and forums that much of the internet generation grew up around, the app allows people to create a “room” on any topic which can be customised with colours, icons and photos.

According to the app’s blog, the new tool is designed to transfer the utility of message boards to the booming mobile world.

In a statement announcing Rooms, Facebook said: “A room is a feed of photos, videos, and text — not too different from the one you have on Instagram or Facebook — with a topic determined by whoever created the room.”

Built up around anonymity, the app allows users to leave their identify at the door, allowing them to sign in with “whatever name makes you feel most comfortable and proud.”

Users can share Rooms with QR-like codes. You take a picture of the invitation, and the app scans your recent photos for the QR code and signs you into the room.

The app is a standalone tool and doesn’t require users to have a Facebook account – users can control each Rooms varying degrees of privacy
