The search engine giant’s decision to name its latest dessert-themed Android OS after a Nestle product was met with confusion by many tech commentators. The move was widely seen as a marketing ploy, despite Google bosses insisting that no money has changed hands.
Marc Vanlerberghe, director of Android marketing, commented: “We couldn’t imagine a better name for our Android K release than the tasty chocolate that’s been a favourite among the team since the early days of Android“.
This is the first time Google has named the technology after an existing and specific brand, though Google’s operating systems have long been blessed with the names of delicious confectionery. From the likes of Cupcake, Donut and Froyo to Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich and Eclair, many predicted the latest Android technology to follow-suit with the name ‘Key-Lime Pie’. We’re sure they’ll get over the surprise eventually…
To celebrate the new Android 4.4 partnership, over 50 million Android-branded KitKat bars will be available in almost 20 countries around the world, including the US and the UK, with the promotional packs directing consumers to a new site, where consumers can take part in competitions to win Android products.
As well as this, Nestlé has released their own fun new tongue-in-cheek site, “KitKat 4.4”, which mimics advertising for tech products, describing the KitKat in a grandiose statement as the ‘future of confectionery’.
