AmazonFresh, an online grocery delivery service in Amazon.com’s hometown that launched in 2007, has a new iPhone app from digital marketing agency Metia/Seattle. The app enables users to order groceries and other Amazon items, as well as to schedule deliveries.
Metia/Seattle designed and implemented the iPhone app, as well as an app for the Windows Phone.
AmazonFresh delivers to about 80 zip codes in the Seattle area. It offers approximately 61,000 items from 300 brands. It also enables users to order some non-grocery items from Amazon.com. In fact, according to AmazonFresh rep Anya Waring, the service’s most popular product is currently the Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson. However, she says bananas and Diet Coke are consistent customer faves.
The service also has an app for Android devices. Andrew Martin, VP at Metia/Seattle, says Amazon built the Android app in-house, but Metia worked on the Windows and iPhone versions. The Windows app launched at the beginning of summer; the Android app launched in the middle of summer, Martin adds. AmazonFresh did not disclose the number of downloads.
Martin says the firm has been working with Amazon for 9 to 12 months. Metia handled all the design and implementation of the app in-house. “Really what we tried to do is to make it as easy as possible to maintain upcoming orders,” he said.
To do that, the app features an intuitive search function that Metia says makes it easy to find items. And shoppers can use their iPhone camera to scan an item’s barcode and add it to their current or future shopping lists. What’s more, after finding an item, shoppers can tap it to view the product page, which includes details like ingredients and nutrition facts. They can also schedule reminders for infrequently purchased products.
To raise awareness in the Seattle area, Waring says AmazonFresh notified its existing AmazonFresh customers, existing Amazon.com customers in Seattle, and AmazonFresh followers on Facebook and Twitter. AmazonFresh has also reached out to local media outlets.
According to AmazonFresh, while the service has consistently added new delivery zip codes, “we are not announcing any plans to expand beyond Seattle at this time.”
