Soccer Fans Will Watch World Cup on Multiple Devices [Survey]

A recent survey reveals that audiences will take a multi-screen approach to watching 2014 World Cup soccer games.

Less than two weeks before the FIFA World Cup kicks off in Brazil, a new study shows that viewers will keep up with the soccer games on more than one device.

In its latest survey, YuMe, a provider of digital video brand advertising solutions, describes the 2014 World Cup as “The Ultimate Multi-Screen Event.” According to the results, watching soccer matches on multiple devices is important to 46 percent of respondents, and close to 60 percent think that watching on several screens will allow them to take in more games.

The results also reveal that live-streaming will be popular across all devices. Respondents indicated that they will watch live games on computers (33 percent), tablets (22 percent), as well as on connected TVs (13 percent) and smartphone (11 percent).

The survey produced several other insights, including:

  • Close to 80 percent of World Cup audiences will watch matches from either a bar, a friend’s home, or work.
  • More than 60 percent of viewers intend to watch highlights on the computer, 23 percent will watch on a smartphone, and 25 percent on a tablet
