What is smoasting? A portmanteau of social media and boast, and we’re all guilty of it. Its a word to describe our desire to use platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to show our friends and family how amazing life is without appearing to make too big a deal about it.
80 percent of social media posts are dedicated to our immediate experiences, and with good reason – scientists have found that speaking frequently about yourself lights up the same areas of the brain that react to food, chocolate and sex.
Ergo, we smoast, through selfies, food porn, checkins, tagging and so on. It’s a phenomenon that seems to have come out of nowhere, and as social media grows in popularity around the world, smoasting isn’t going to go away any time soon.
